PRACTICAL ASPECT OF RAGA BHOOPALI
It is a major pentatonic scale . The raga floats more in mandra and madhya saptak.hence we can say the raga is a poorvanga pradhan (पूर्वांग प्रधान) raga. Although this raga belongs to thaat kalyan therefore some people consider it as BHOOP KALYAN .while eliminating the tivra madhyam and shuddha nishad from raga yaman / raga kalyan ,we achieve raga bhoopali.a performer must pay attention to the role of each swara.
SHADAJ- shadaj is the prominent note in all the ragas except some.here in Bhoopali, shadaj is a nyas swara in aroha and avaroha both.for example:
1.SA RE SA 'DHA SA
2.GA RE SA 'DHA SA
3.GA PA GA RE, SA RE SA 'DHA SA
4.DHA SA' RE' SA' DHA PA ,GA PA GA RE SA RE SA 'DHA SA
It is also used as a grace note (कण स्वर) on shuddha dhaivat(DHA).for example:
SA (SA)'DHA SA RE GA
The highlighted note SA in the bracket is shown as a grace note.
RISHABH- rishabh is shuddha and used as a nyas swar in avaroha. There is a kan(grace note) of gandhar(GA) on rishabh(RE).following phrases shows the role of rishabh in this raga,
SA (GA)RE GA,GA RE PA GA,PA RE GA,SA RE,RE GA RE,SA RE SA 'DHA SA
GANDHAR- gandhar is the prominent note of raga Bhoopali as it is Vadi(मुख्य स्वर).therefore gandhar is a nyas bahutwa swar.the phrases in this raga revolve arround gandhar including it.for example:
1.PA GA DHA PA (PA)GA
2.SA RE GA RE, 'DHA SA RE GA
3.GA PA DHA SA' DHA PA GA
PANCHAM- it is also a nyas swara in raga Bhoopali.there is a nyas on pancham in aroha.for example:
1.GA RE GA PA
2.SA RE GA PA
3.RE GA PA ,DHA GA PA
4.SA 'DHA SA RE GA PA
DHAIVAT- although it is a Vadi note(वादी) but it can not be used as a nyasa swar. Since RAGA Bhoopali is similar to Raga Deshkar which rises when one does nyas on dhaivat .therefore, one should be aware of this fact to maintain the raga swaroop.here in raga Bhoopali ,the GA-DHA coupling is beautiful. for example:
1.PA GA-DHA PA GA
2.GA RE GA RE GA-DHA PA
